Springtime in Michigan: Oberon Day

March 28 is Oberon Day, when everyone's favorite Michigan-brewed summertime beer returns for the season. OK, it's not everyone's favorite summertime beer, but it's the favorite of enough people that it accounts for half of Bell's Michigan beer sales, so it's kind of a big deal. Even many bars with mostly NASCAR beers on draft often will sport a tap handle featuring the familiar Oberon sun guy.

Although the weather forecast looks fairly crappy for the next week, the calendar does say it's officially spring, and there's reason to celebrate the warmer days soon to come – by drinking some Oberon and scoring some free Bell's swag, of course.

Around town there are a number of Oberon celebrations:

» Sunday night, there are midnight tappings at Ashley's, Bar Louie, the Brown Jug, the Packard Pub, Dan's Downtown Tavern (Saline), and Sidetrack Bar & Grill (Ypsilanti). (Rumor says Fraser's Pub also will be pouring at midnight, but as yet I have not confirmed nor disconfirmed this.) Most, if not all, of the venues will have a rep on hand to give away cool Oberon t-shirts, keychains, and other items. Ashley's will again host a ceremonial crowning of the new year's King or Queen Oberon (qualifications include: name drawn out of a hat).

» On Monday from 2-6pm, there's a Downtown Ann Arbor Oberon Pub Crawl, beginning at Cottage Inn Restaurant then proceeding to Bar Louie, Sava's Cafe, Red Hawk Bar & Grill, and Ashley's. Bell's rep David Munro and folks from Bell's distributor Rave Associates will be there to talk beer, hand out the Oberon merch, and, of course, hoist some pints of sunny elixir. Here's hoping it won't snow.
